How Ironworks Gate Co. of San Jose Was Born in San Jose
It was 1984. We’d been working gates in the trade for a few years already, mostly down in Los Angeles, and we’d started to notice something that didn’t sit right. A homeowner in Alum Rock called us out to look at a sagging driveway gate - wrought iron, probably from the sixties, beautiful scrollwork that someone had taken real pride in once. Three other companies had been there before us. One quoted her fourteen hundred dollars to replace the whole thing. Another said the hinge pins were “obsolete” and sold her a welded patch that cracked inside of two months. The third never showed up at all.
We fixed it in an afternoon. Ground out the rust, fitted new bronze bushings, hung it true. Charged her for the hours and the parts, nothing more. She stood there in her driveway in San Jose with her hands on her hips and said, “Why couldn’t I find you first?” That was the moment. We called the next morning and asked about bringing Ironworks Gate Co. up to Santa Clara County. The brand was already established - forged in ’84, built on the Keystone Standard - but San Jose needed its own branch, its own team that understood the soil here, the way the clay shifts in the East Foothills, how the salt air off the bay eats at coastal welds differently than inland rust. Our Founder’s Personal Connection to the Gate Repair Trade
We didn’t stumble into this work. We were drawn to it, the way some people are drawn to woodworking or to engines. Our grandfather wasn’t a blacksmith - we don’t have some romantic family lineage to sell you. What we had was curiosity and patience, and a tradesman who trained us in a shop in the industrial corridor south of downtown San Jose, back when that area still smelled of hot metal and cutting oil. He was old-school. Wouldn’t let us touch a client’s gate until we could forge a hinge from raw stock that he couldn’t break with a sledgehammer. Taught us to listen to a gate the way a mechanic listens to an engine: the scrape of a dry bushing, the shudder of a misaligned track, the particular whine of a FAAC operator straining against a binding leaf.
Forty-two years. That’s not a credential to us. It’s mornings. It’s the weight of a Lincoln welder in your hands before the sun’s up.
